Bhopal sees 20 candidates in fray as polling begins
Voting for the Madhya Pradesh State Bar Council elections commenced across the state on Tuesday morning, with nearly 88,000 advocates exercising their franchise. In Bhopal, polling began at 10 a.m. at the district court premises and will continue until 5 p.m.
The election, being conducted under Supreme Court directives, has generated considerable enthusiasm among the legal fraternity. A total of 122 candidates are contesting from across the state, with 20 candidates in the race from Bhopal alone.
Selection process underway
From the pool of candidates, 18 male and 7 female members will be elected to the council. The election is being overseen by a high-power committee constituted specifically for this purpose, ensuring adherence to Supreme Court guidelines.
Manoharlal Patidar, the chief electoral officer, confirmed that the election is being conducted in strict compliance with Supreme Court orders. "We have ensured all necessary arrangements for a smooth voting process," he said.
Key candidates in spotlight
Several prominent figures from Bhopal are in contention. Among them are incumbent co-chairman Vijay Chaudhary, former co-chairman Mohammad Mahabub Ansari, Rajesh Vyas, P.C. Kothari, and Chandrakumar Valeja, among others.
Identity verification mandatory
Advocates have been required to carry identity documents issued by either the State Bar Council or their respective district bar associations. No one will be allowed to vote without proper identification.
Courts closed for the day
All courts across the state have been declared closed to facilitate the voting process. Judges and judicial staff are actively assisting in the conduct of polling. Deputy District Judge Manoharlal Patidar has been appointed as the polling officer, overseeing the entire election process.
The elections reflect the bar's commitment to democratic participation in governing professional affairs. Voting is expected to conclude by evening, with results likely to be declared later this week.
