MP Hospitals Roll Out Barcode & QR Code Tracking to Combat Fake Medicines

Madhya Pradesh government hospitals are set to revolutionize drug safety with a mandatory barcode and QR code system on all essential medicines. Announced by the Madhya Pradesh Public Health Service Corporation Limited (MPPHC), this digital tracking initiative aims to curb the rising menace of counterfeit drugs and ensure complete transparency in the supply chain.

Starting immediately, every medicine on the Essential Drug List (EDL) supplied to state-run hospitals must feature a QR code or barcode on its packaging. Patients, doctors, and hospital staff can simply scan the code using a smartphone to instantly verify critical details—including the drug name, manufacturer, batch number, manufacturing date, expiry date, and license information.

“This is a game-changer for patient safety,” said a senior Health Department official. “Even if fake medicines account for less than 1% of the market, one counterfeit pill can be deadly. With Madhya Pradesh’s annual pharmaceutical trade exceeding ₹10,000 crore, we cannot take risks.”

The system will be rolled out across district hospitals, medical colleges, community health centers, and drug supply units before the next financial year. Over 500 essential medicines are already under the new protocol, with pharmaceutical companies mandated to comply or face supply bans.

How Barcode & QR Code Verification Works

- Scan the code via any QR reader app

- Get real-time authenticity confirmation

- Flag suspicious or expired batches instantly

Authorities believe this will dismantle fake drug networks operating through e-pharmacies and unauthorized online channels, where counterfeit packaging mimics original brands.

Transition Period for Existing Stock

Medicines already in circulation without barcodes will remain valid for a limited grace period. Post-deadline, all non-compliant stock will be phased out systematically.

Experts hail the move as a national benchmark. “MP is leading the charge against spurious drugs,” said a Bhopal-based pharmacist. “Digital tracking at the hospital level ensures accountability—from manufacturer to bedside.”

As counterfeit medicine cases continue to threaten public health nationwide, Madhya Pradesh’s proactive barcode/QR code mandate sets a powerful precedent for transparency, trust, and technology-driven healthcare.
