MP Jujutsu Athlete’s Death Sparks Probe Into Alleged Harassment by Association VP

The death of international jujutsu athlete Rohini Kalam has triggered a criminal investigation in Dewas, with police examining allegations of sustained harassment by Madhya Pradesh Jiu-Jitsu Association Vice-President Preetam Singh and her coach, Vijendra Kharsodia. Rohini, 35, was found hanging in her room on October 26, two days after she was allegedly taken out late at night by Singh.

BNP Police have arrested both Singh and Kharsodia, stating that Rohini had been subjected to significant mental pressure in the months leading up to her death. According to investigators, her final phone conversation was with Singh shortly before she took her life.

Rohini’s younger sister, Roshni, said Singh arrived at their home around midnight on October 24 and took Rohini away without explaining the purpose or destination. “She returned the next day and seemed disturbed. On the 26th, she locked herself inside her room. When we forced the door open, she was unresponsive,” Roshni said.

Rohini was an accomplished athlete, serving as General Secretary of the state association and coaching at a private school in Ashta. She had participated in national and international competitions since 2015 and was preparing for the IPS examinations. Family members said she had been attempting to distance herself from Singh, who allegedly monitored her movements and repeatedly pressured her despite her lack of interest in a relationship.

Police sources said Singh had developed one-sided feelings for Rohini after meeting her during training sessions over the past two years. Kharsodia, too, allegedly exerted pressure on her to continue coaching duties even after a stomach surgery in May. Both men frequently contacted her, which, according to the family, contributed to her emotional distress.

Rohini’s mother, Mamta Kalam, confirmed that Singh had proposed marriage multiple times but Rohini refused, focusing instead on her career.

Station Officer Amit Solanki said the investigation will focus on the events of the night of October 24 and the extent of the harassment. Both accused have been remanded to judicial custody as inquiries continue.
