Madhya Pradesh Revenue Minister Karan Singh Verma on Friday described officials who accept bribes as “traitors” and said he has ordered the suspension of several tehsildars across the state over corruption and administrative misconduct. Speaking in Rajgarh, Verma asserted that dishonesty is a matter of character and does not change with position or power.
Addressing the media, the minister said corruption exists in many systems, but anyone found taking bribes—irrespective of rank—betrays public trust. “Whether you make a dishonest person a minister, a tehsildar, an engineer or a labourer, the habit remains the same,” Verma said, underlining his zero-tolerance stance on graft.
The minister confirmed that tehsildars in Rajgarh, Ashta and Seoni have been suspended for irregularities related to demarcation work and other administrative lapses. He said disciplinary action was necessary to restore confidence among citizens, particularly farmers who depend on the revenue department for land-related services.
Referring to his own background as a farmer and an eight-time elected representative, Verma said he had never felt the need to seek illegal gains. He added that public life demands accountability and restraint, noting that officials must work with “honesty and patriotism” rather than seek excuses for errors. He also recounted interactions with district officials, saying he had urged collectors to correct mistakes promptly instead of minimising complaints as minor issues.
During his visit to Rajgarh, Verma highlighted his approach to official tours, saying he avoids special arrangements and carries his own meals when necessary. He said such practices were intended to send a message that public office should not be used for personal comfort or privilege.
The minister’s remarks on corruption come amid recent controversy over his comments on the Ladli Behna Yojana. On February 5, a video surfaced in which Verma warned that beneficiaries who failed to attend a government programme in Sehore could face removal from the scheme. The statement drew criticism, prompting the minister to clarify his position the following day.
Verma later retracted the remark, stating that the Ladli Behna Yojana is a welfare scheme meant to respect and support women and cannot be discontinued. He said his comments were made in the context of encouraging participation in government initiatives and expressed regret if they caused hurt or misunderstanding.
The state government has repeatedly emphasised its commitment to curbing corruption in the revenue administration. Verma said strict action against erring officials would continue, signalling that further scrutiny and disciplinary measures could follow in districts where complaints persist.
