MP Teachers Get Relief Over e-Attendance Technical Errors

The Madhya Pradesh government has provided relief to teachers and guest teachers facing difficulties with the state's e-attendance system. Teachers whose online attendance is not recorded because of a technical problem will not be treated as absent solely on that basis, and their salaries will not be withheld.

However, the government has clarified that marking e-attendance remains mandatory. The relaxation applies specifically to cases where attendance could not be recorded because of technical or system-related problems.

The decision is expected to benefit around 3.17 lakh teachers working across government schools in Madhya Pradesh, including guest teachers.

Technical Error Won’t Mean Absence

Under the e-attendance system, teachers are required to record their attendance digitally. Technical glitches have, however, created difficulties for some teachers in registering their presence.

The latest clarification makes it clear that a failure caused by a technical issue cannot automatically be treated as unauthorised absence.

This means teachers will not face salary-related action merely because the digital system failed to capture their attendance.

Salary Will Not Be Stopped

The most significant relief concerns salary payments.

If a teacher is unable to mark attendance because of a technical error, the absence of an online attendance entry alone will not be sufficient grounds for withholding salary.

The move is aimed at preventing genuine technical failures from affecting the salaries of teachers who were otherwise present at their schools.

The applicable verification process will remain important in determining whether the failure was genuinely caused by a technical problem.

Guest Teachers Also Covered

The relaxation will also apply to guest teachers working in government schools.

Guest teachers have also been required to use the digital attendance mechanism, making them vulnerable to similar problems when the system does not function properly.

The clarification ensures that technical difficulties in e-attendance do not automatically result in financial consequences for this category of teaching staff.

E-Attendance Still Mandatory

Despite the relief, the government has not withdrawn the requirement to record attendance electronically.

Teachers are expected to continue using the e-attendance system as prescribed.

The distinction is that a teacher's failure to register attendance because of a technical problem should not be equated with deliberate non-compliance or absence.

Teachers will therefore still need to make reasonable efforts to record their attendance through the designated system.

Nearly 3.17 Lakh Teachers Affected

The decision is significant because around 3.17 lakh teachers are covered by the state's school education system.

The government has been pushing digital attendance as part of efforts to improve monitoring and accountability in government schools.
