Due to continuous heavy rains in the upper regions of the state, the water level of the Narmada river is increasing rapidly. Under water management, 12 gates of two major dams built on Narmada - Indira Sagar and 9 gates of Omkareshwar dam were opened on Sunday. About 3500 cumecs of water is being discharged from Omkareshwar dam, while 1860 cumecs of water is being released into Narmada through turbine operation. Due to this, all the ghats of Omkareshwar, Barwah, Khedighat and Navghatkhedi have been submerged.
In view of the rise in water level, the administration has issued an alert in the lower settlements. Brahmapuri Ghat has been completely closed and a complete ban has been imposed on boat operation in Narmada. All the shops in Barwah's Navghatkhedi area have been removed. Along with this, instructions have been issued to remain alert by informing the regional administration like Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, Dhar, Dhamnod, Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, Sanawad.
The administration is alerting the general public by making public announcement in Omkareshwar and Barwah. Officials say that if the intensity of rain remains, then more gates of Omkareshwar dam can also be opened. Pilgrims and tourists who have set out on the pilgrimage are appealed not to go towards the ghats and follow the instructions of the administration.
