Neighbourhood Dispute Escalates into Firing in Gwalior Village; One Arrested, CCTV Footage Aids Probe

A neighbourhood dispute in Utila village of Gwalior district escalated into a violent assault and firing on Monday evening, triggering panic among residents. Police have arrested one accused and launched a search for others after CCTV footage captured the attackers fleeing the scene with firearms.

According to police, the incident stemmed from an argument earlier in the day between two neighbours, Vivek Shukla and Krishna Jat, both residents of Utila under the jurisdiction of Utila police station. What began as a verbal altercation in the afternoon soon turned into a physical fight, laying the ground for the later attack.

Investigators said that in the evening, Krishna Jat allegedly returned to the village with his associates Jitendra Jat and Vikku Jat to retaliate. The group is accused of assaulting Vivek Shukla near his residence. When 34-year-old Ashish Pathak, another local resident, intervened to stop the assault, one of the attackers allegedly opened fire at him using a country-made pistol.

Although no fatal injuries were reported, the firing created fear in the area, with villagers rushing indoors after hearing gunshots. Police said the accused fled immediately after the incident.

CCTV footage from cameras installed along the escape route has emerged, showing the accused leaving the area on an Activa scooter. In the footage, at least one of the men can be seen brandishing a country-made pistol, which has become a key piece of evidence in the investigation.

Police sources said that one of the accused, Vikku Jat, is the maternal cousin of notorious urban criminal Harendra Rana. Officials, however, clarified that the case is being investigated strictly on the basis of available evidence and individual roles.

Following the complaint lodged by Ashish Pathak, police reached the spot, recorded statements of witnesses and registered an FIR under relevant sections related to assault, firing and criminal intimidation. Accused Krishna Jat was arrested shortly after the incident.

The complainant has also raised suspicion about the possible involvement of Ramkumar Gurjar. Police said his role is being verified and he is currently under scrutiny.

An official at Utila police station said raids are underway to apprehend the remaining accused and recover the weapon used in the firing. “The situation in the village is under control. Additional patrolling has been deployed to prevent any further escalation,” the officer said.

Police have assured residents of strict action against all those involved, stating that incidents of violence over personal disputes will not be tolerated. Further arrests are expected as the investigation progresses.
