January 1, 2026, is set to bring a major administrative reshuffle in Madhya Pradesh, with promotion orders for senior IAS, IPS and IFS officers expected to be issued on Tuesday evening. According to official sources, 71 IAS officers and 21 IPS officers of the Madhya Pradesh cadre will receive promotions with effect from the New Year, marking one of the largest annual elevation exercises in recent years.
The General Administration Department (GAD) is scheduled to release the promotion orders for IAS officers, while the Home Department will issue orders related to IPS promotions. The exercise follows the completion of eligibility criteria and cadre reviews as prescribed by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
Among the senior-most promotions, GAD Secretary M. Selvendran will be elevated to the rank of Principal Secretary from January 1. Although Selvendran had been eligible earlier, his promotion was aligned with the DoPT rule mandating a minimum of 25 years of service for elevation to the Principal Secretary rank.
In the IPS cadre, one post of Director General (DG) is due for promotion. If IPS officer Anant Kumar Singh’s return to the Madhya Pradesh cadre is formally confirmed by Tuesday evening, he will be promoted from Additional Director General (ADG) to DG. Otherwise, ADG Ajaz Aakanksha Ashutosh Rai is likely to be promoted to the DG rank, officials said.
Jabalpur Inspector General Pramod Verma will be promoted to ADG, while retaining his current posting. He currently also holds additional charge of the Shahdol IG range. Three officers are set to be promoted to the rank of Inspector General (IG), including 2008-batch officers A. Shiyas and Lalit Shakyawar. Senior IPS officer Niranjan V. Yanganakar of the 1999 batch will also be promoted to IG after an eight-year delay, despite his batchmates having already moved to ADG rank.
At the mid-level, 13 IPS officers will be promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG). These include officers from the 2010, 2011 and 2012 batches, many of whom are currently serving as district Superintendents of Police. Officials indicated that most of these officers are likely to continue at their present postings due to restrictions on transfers imposed during the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which remains in force until February 21.
Meanwhile, promotions of some IAS officers have been deferred. Elevations of Tarun Bhatnagar, Anurag Chaudhary and Santosh Kumar Verma to Secretary and Additional Secretary ranks have been put on hold, while IAS officer Rishi Garg’s promotion has been stalled due to an ongoing departmental inquiry.
Promotions for Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers are also expected to be notified. Senior officials said the annual promotion exercise is aimed at addressing cadre requirements and ensuring administrative continuity across departments as the state enters the New Year.
