A 24-year-old newlywed woman allegedly died by suicide at her matrimonial home in Madhya Pradesh’s Mauganj district, leaving behind a 10-page suicide note in which she blamed her husband and mother-in-law for sustained harassment. The incident came to light on the morning of December 24, when her body was found hanging inside a room of the house.
The deceased, Karuna Dwivedi, had been married to Shivam Mishra of Badhaiya Bhaluha village on May 8, 2025. According to police and family members, Karuna had been facing persistent harassment soon after the marriage, primarily over dowry-related demands.
In the handwritten note recovered from the spot, Karuna wrote that she was “fed up with daily harassment” and held her husband and mother-in-law responsible for driving her to take the extreme step. She described repeated quarrels, physical assault, emotional abuse, and neglect, stating that she felt isolated and betrayed by those she trusted the most.
Her brother, Kuldeep Dwivedi, told police that the harassment began within 15 days of the wedding. He alleged that Karuna was taunted and pressured over dowry demands, including trivial household items. He said she returned to her maternal home on November 14 after being allegedly beaten by her husband and mother-in-law and had refused to go back.
The suicide note also mentions incidents of physical violence and humiliation, accusing the husband of prioritising money and personal interests over her well-being. Karuna wrote that repeated insults and mistreatment left her feeling worthless and emotionally broken.
Police said the body was sent for post-mortem examination and statements of family members have been recorded. Hanumana police Anil Kakade confirmed that a suicide case has been registered and the contents of the note are being examined.
Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Mauganj, Shachi Pathak, is supervising the investigation. Officials said further legal action will be taken after completing the inquiry and verifying all allegations mentioned in the suicide note.
