NHAI Marks Speed Breakers on Mortakka Bridge to Prevent Accidents
Digital Desk
To address frequent accidents on the Indore-Ichhapur Highway, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has added visible markings on speed breakers at the Mortakka Bridge. Previously, the hard speed breakers on both sides of the bridge lacked proper markings, causing vehicles to bounce and accidents to occur, especially during night-time when visibility was low.
Local residents Mohit Sahu, Ganesh Nariya, and Ashok Jadhav brought the issue of frequent accidents at these unmarked speed breakers to the attention of Ashutosh Soni, Project Director of NHAI Khandwa. Acting promptly, Soni instructed the highway construction company to mark the hazardous speed breakers. Using road-marking machinery, the company completed the markings, which are expected to reduce accidents and ease traffic congestion.
History of Accidents at the Bridge
The Mortakka Bridge, built in 1947, has witnessed multiple accidents in the past, causing damage to vehicles and long traffic jams. Locals have thanked NHAI for taking action to enhance safety.
Despite a 25-ton weight limit, vehicles exceeding 80 tons frequently use the bridge. Its deteriorating condition makes it vulnerable, and authorities warn that a major accident could occur if strict regulations are not enforced.
The recent marking initiative is seen as a vital step toward improving road safety for commuters while preventing accidents on this aging bridge.
