A special wave of relief and celebration will mark Republic Day at Gwalior Central Jail, where nine prisoners — including one woman — are set to be released after completing 14 years of imprisonment in murder cases, officials confirmed.
The release, scheduled for January 26, follows approval from jail headquarters and completion of all formalities by the prison administration. Families of the eligible prisoners have been notified to receive their loved ones outside the facility.
“This initiative is aimed at encouraging reformation and promoting disciplined behaviour among inmates,” said Jail Superintendent Vidit Sarvaiya. He added that the prisoners had demonstrated exemplary conduct during their incarceration, assisting fellow inmates and contributing positively to the prison environment.
A special Republic Day programme has been organized inside the jail, which will include ceremonial proceedings. Following the ceremony, the prisoners due for release will be served a meal and formally bid farewell with traditional gestures, including a shawl and coconut. Fellow inmates will also participate in the emotional farewell.
The prisoners slated for release include:
-
Aadesh, son of Ajay Mishra
-
Atar Singh, son of Shimbhu Yadav
-
Hardaul, son of Hiraman Rajawat
-
Mukesh, son of Bhagwanlal Ojha
-
Kamlesh, son of Bharosa Jatav
-
Shivdayal, son of Imrat Singh Khangar
-
Gajendra, son of Jagdish Chauhan
-
Chhote alias Purushottam, son of Babulal Jatav
-
Ramsri, wife of Gopal Singh Pal
Releasing inmates with good conduct on Republic Day is a long-standing tradition at Gwalior Central Jail and across many correctional facilities in India. The practice is intended to acknowledge the positive transformation of prisoners and incentivize responsible behaviour during imprisonment.
“Over the years, this programme has helped reinforce the idea that reform and rehabilitation are central to the prison system,” added Mr. Sarvaiya. “The gesture also strengthens the connection between the prison and society by allowing families to participate in the reintegration process.”
While Republic Day celebrations nationwide focus on patriotism and public service, Gwalior Central Jail’s initiative reflects the correctional system’s emphasis on reformation and humane treatment of inmates, highlighting the potential for positive change even among long-term prisoners.
