Nursing student dies by suicide in Datia; sarpanch mother collapses after seeing son

A final-year nursing student died by suicide after allegedly shooting himself with a pistol at his residence in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday morning, police said. The incident occurred in Sikri village under the jurisdiction of Indergarh police station, sending shockwaves through the area.

The deceased has been identified as Vishal Jatav, son of Sikri gram panchayat sarpanch Sushila Jatav. Vishal was pursuing General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) from Gwalior and was in his final year of studies. He had returned to his native village from Gwalior just a day before the incident.

According to police and family members, the incident took place early Saturday when Vishal was alone in a room on the ground floor of the house. His mother and younger brother were upstairs at the time. Family members said they heard a loud gunshot and rushed downstairs, where they found Vishal lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his chest and profuse bleeding.

On seeing her son in a blood-soaked condition, Sarpanch Sushila Jatav reportedly fainted. Other family members immediately arranged to take Vishal to Gwalior for medical treatment. However, doctors at the hospital declared him dead on arrival.

Police officials said Vishal had not shown any visible signs of stress or distress prior to the incident. “Family members have stated that he did not share any personal or academic pressure with them. The exact reason behind the suicide is not known at this stage,” an investigating officer said.

Following information from the family, a police team from Indergarh police station reached the spot and secured the scene. The body was taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death and sequence of events. The pistol used in the incident has also been seized for forensic examination.

News of the sarpanch’s son dying by suicide spread quickly, leading to a large gathering of villagers at the residence. Residents described Vishal as a quiet and focused student with aspirations to build a career in the healthcare sector.

Police said statements of family members and close relatives are being recorded. Further investigation will be carried out based on the post-mortem report and forensic findings. “At present, it appears to be a case of suicide, but all aspects are being examined as part of the investigation,” the officer added.

The incident has cast a pall of grief over Sikri village, with local leaders and residents expressing condolences to the bereaved family.
