A man from Sanavad died and five others, including a Mumbai couple on a religious pilgrimage, were injured in a head-on car crash in Umrikheda area on Monday morning, police said.
The deceased, Bhaiyalal, son of Laxmilal, succumbed to his injuries at Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH). He was being transported to Indore for medical treatment when the accident occurred.
Tejaji Nagar police station in-charge Devendra Markam told reporters that preliminary probes point to drowsy driving. The driver of one car, heading from Ujjain to Omkareshwar, apparently dozed off, veering into the opposite lane and slamming into a vehicle traveling from Sanavad to Indore.
Both vehicles suffered extensive front-end damage from the high-impact collision.
The injured include Mumbai residents Nikhil Kothari and his wife Saloni, who had visited Ujjain for darshan the previous day and hired a taxi for Omkareshwar. Also hurt were Aman, son of Rashid Khan from Ujjain; Omprakash, son of Alok Chand from Sanavad; and Chetram, son of Barelal from Sanavad. Omprakash and Chetram, relatives of Bhaiyalal, accompanied him in the Sanavad-bound car. Omprakash was later moved to a private facility.
The Mumbai couple, originally from Gujarat, described their trip as part of religious visits across Madhya Pradesh.
Police arrived promptly, securing the site and launching an investigation. No charges have been filed yet, but authorities continue to examine factors like fatigue on busy pilgrimage routes.
Such incidents highlight ongoing concerns over driver rest, especially on highways linking spiritual sites like Ujjain and Omkareshwar.
