Patients Examined Under Mobile Flashlights at MY Hospital OPD, Fresh Video Raises Questions on Infrastructure and Security

Indore’s Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital has sparked public outrage after showing doctors examining patients under mobile phone flashlights during a power outage in the outpatient department on Wednesday morning. The footage, recorded by a patient’s attendant, shows OPD rooms plunged into darkness, with doctors continuing consultations using makeshift lighting. The attendant later claimed security guards confronted him and attempted to stop him from filming.

MY Hospital Superintendent Dr. Ashok Yadav acknowledged the incident, attributing the situation to a brief disruption caused by ongoing Discom work for the adjacent Cancer Hospital. “Electricity was intact throughout the hospital. Discom took a brief block of a few minutes for their technical work, after which power was restored immediately,” he said. However, the visuals reignited debate over the hospital’s preparedness and the absence of emergency lighting in one of the state’s busiest healthcare facilities.

This is the second video in a week to emerge from the MY Hospital campus, adding to concerns about overall administration and security. Days earlier, another clip went viral showing two young men drinking alcohol openly in the doctors’ parking area around 7.30 pm. No security personnel intervened, despite patients and their families walking nearby. Sources said the men were acquaintances of a doctor posted at the hospital, prompting an internal inquiry after the video attracted criticism.

The controversies come at a time when the MGM Medical College administration has enforced strict checks on food distribution, sealed multiple entry points, and conducted routine metal-detector screenings to curb rat infestation. Public health advocates argue that such selective enforcement overlooks core issues, including reliable power backup and consistent security oversight.

With two consecutive incidents highlighting operational lapses, calls for accountability are growing. Officials say internal reports on both episodes are underway and appropriate corrective measures will follow.
