Priest Who Funded Wife’s Education Faces Divorce After She Becomes SI; Case Before Bhopal Family Court

A domestic dispute unfolding in Bhopal’s Family Court has drawn attention for its unusual circumstances, where a husband who funded his wife’s education to help her become a police officer now faces divorce after she cited embarrassment over his profession and appearance.
According to court records, the husband, a Hindu priest by occupation, supported his wife’s long-standing ambition to join the police force. He managed household expenses by performing religious rituals and allegedly invested a substantial portion of his earnings in her education and competitive exam preparation. The wife later cleared the recruitment process and was appointed as a Sub-Inspector.

Soon after her appointment, relations between the couple deteriorated. The wife filed a petition seeking divorce, stating that she felt ashamed of her husband’s priesthood, traditional attire, and personal appearance, including his shikha (topknot). The matter is currently under consideration in the District and Sessions Court, Bhopal, where counseling efforts have failed to yield reconciliation.
In her plea, the woman reportedly told the court that she finds it difficult to continue the marriage due to social embarrassment. She objected to her husband wearing a dhoti-kurta and maintaining a traditional hairstyle, and said his work as a priest conflicted with her professional identity as a police officer. She also demanded that he alter his appearance, a condition the husband refused to accept.
The husband, in his response, maintained that he respected his wife’s aspirations from the outset and stood by her during years of preparation. He told the court that he feels betrayed after making personal and financial sacrifices for her career, only to be rejected once she achieved success. He further alleged that pressure to abandon his religious identity amounted to humiliation and mental distress.
Family court counselors confirmed that multiple counseling sessions were conducted in an attempt to resolve the dispute amicably. However, officials said the wife remained firm in her decision to seek separation, stating she could not take the relationship forward under the present circumstances.
Legal experts note that the case raises questions around marital obligations, personal identity, and social perceptions tied to profession and status. While the court has not yet issued a ruling, it is expected to closely examine whether the grounds cited constitute valid reasons for divorce under prevailing family laws.
The proceedings continue, with the court expected to hear further arguments in the coming weeks.
