Digital Desk
A major security and integrity breach has emerged at the Balaghat Kotwali Police Station, where Rs.55 lakh in cash and gold-silver jewellery valued at Rs.10 lakh were discovered missing from the station’s locker. The incident came to light when a female complainant arrived to retrieve her assets, which had been seized earlier in a fraud case.
Discovery of the Missing Assets
According to preliminary reports, the complainant had completed all court procedures and approached the Station In-Charge (TI) to collect her money and jewellery. When the TI directed the locker in-charge to retrieve the items, the latter locked himself inside the locker room. Suspicious arose immediately, leading to a confrontation that uncovered the staggering shortfall.
Gambling Loss and Suicide Attempt
Investigations revealed that the locker in-charge had misappropriated government funds, allegedly losing the money in gambling activities. Upon being confronted, the official reportedly attempted to hang himself from a ceiling fan inside the police station. He was rescued in time and is now under scrutiny. Balaghat IG Sanjay Kumar confirmed the missing assets and stated that an FIR is being registered against the accused personnel.
Institutional Concerns and Ongoing Probe
The incident has raised serious questions about the safeguarding of government property and the accountability of police personnel entrusted with valuable evidence. The police department is actively investigating the matter, including the gambling allegations and the attempted suicide. The case underscores the need for stricter oversight and transparency in handling seized assets.
This developing story highlights critical lapses in internal security protocols, eroding public trust in law enforcement. Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
