At least 28 schoolchildren were injured on Sunday morning after a school bus carrying students and staff to a picnic fell into the Sagar River from a narrow bridge near Johad village in Vidisha district, police said. The bus belonged to Higher Secondary School, Bahadurpur, and was heading to Sanchi when the accident occurred.
According to preliminary information, the mishap took place when the bus driver attempted to give way to an oncoming vehicle on the narrow bridge. While moving the bus towards the edge of the road, the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the bridge and plunge into the riverbed below.
The impact triggered panic among the children, who began screaming for help. Local villagers rushed to the spot and were the first to assist, helping students out of the damaged bus and providing initial care until emergency services arrived. Officials from the district administration and personnel from Nateran police station reached the site soon after being alerted and coordinated rescue operations.
Police said several injured children were taken to the Government Hospital in Ganjbasoda for treatment, while those with more serious injuries were referred to the District Hospital in Vidisha. Doctors confirmed that all the injured were stable and out of danger. No fatalities have been reported.
Authorities said a major tragedy was averted as there was no water in the Sagar River at the spot where the bus fell, reducing the risk of drowning. The bus sustained significant damage in the fall.
District officials have ordered a preliminary inquiry to determine whether safety norms were followed and to assess the condition of the bridge and the vehicle. The bus driver is being questioned to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the accident.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of school transport on narrow rural roads, particularly during excursions. Officials said further action would be taken after the completion of the inquiry.
