Seven body donations in four days across Madhya Pradesh

In the past four days alone, Madhya Pradesh has witnessed seven body donations — a clear indication of growing public awareness and commitment toward this noble cause. Indore, already a leader in organ donation across the state, continues to set an example with a steady rise in cadaver donations since the government introduced the practice of giving donors a Guard of Honour during handovers.

Officials from MGM Medical College credit this change to the symbolic gesture announced by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on July 1, noting a significant boost in social participation. With over 15 body donations recorded in Indore since July, they expect the number to surpass 100 by the end of the year.

Families honour final wishes of donors

On October 18 (Saturday), the eyes, skin, and body of Leela Kale, a resident of Vasudev Nagar and former teacher at Ahilya Ashram School, were donated in accordance with her wish. Two years earlier, she had pledged her body through Dadhichi Mission. Fulfilling her last wish, her family donated her eyes to MY Hospital Eye Bank, her skin to Choithram Skin Bank, and her body to MGM Medical College for medical research.

Similarly, on October 16 (Thursday), 81-year-old Digambar Kopargaonkar from Shivsagar Colony donated his eyes, skin, and body as per his final wish. His family ensured the donation was carried out with dignity, and he was honoured with a Guard of Honour by the Madhya Pradesh Police.

State honour policy driving awareness

Since the state introduced the Guard of Honour policy for body and organ donors on July 1, officials report a noticeable rise in public participation. They believe the gesture not only comforts bereaved families but also inspires others to contribute.

“Families feel a deep sense of peace when their loved ones are honoured for serving society even in death. It inspires others to pledge for organ or body donation,”
said a senior official at MGM Medical College.

Indore continues to lead

Data compiled since July 1 shows Indore topping the list of body donations across Madhya Pradesh:

A shift in mindset

Medical and social organizations such as Dadhichi Mission and Muskan Group have been instrumental in motivating families to come forward for donation. Experts view this surge as a sign of a positive social transformation — one where the spirit of giving continues to live on, even after death.
