Shivpuri sadhu dies of suspected heart attack while warming himself by fire; incident caught on CCTV

A sadhu collapsed and died of a suspected heart attack while sitting near a bonfire with villagers in Algi village of Shivpuri district on Wednesday night, police said. The incident occurred around 9 pm near the Panchayat building under the Dinara police station area and was captured on a nearby CCTV camera.

The deceased was identified as Brajesh Giri Maharaj, a resident of Algi village and the husband of a member of the Karaira Janpad Panchayat. Police said he was sitting on a cot with other villagers, warming himself by the fire, when he suddenly fell backward and became unresponsive.

Villagers present at the spot immediately attempted to lift him and check his condition, but there was no response. He was rushed to the Dinara Health Centre, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Preliminary assessment suggests death due to a heart attack, though the exact cause will be confirmed after further medical examination.

Following the incident, Dinara police reached both the hospital and the site of the collapse to begin formal proceedings. A case has been registered under routine provisions, and statements of witnesses are being recorded. Police said the CCTV footage is being examined as part of the inquiry, though there is no indication of foul play at this stage.

According to local residents, Brajesh Giri Maharaj had been living an ascetic life for several years. Originally from Algi village, he had joined the Juna Akhara and adopted sainthood, after which he became widely known in the region. He spent much of his time at the Sikandra temple area and remained actively engaged with villagers on social and civic issues.

In recent years, Brajesh Giri Maharaj had drawn attention for raising allegations of corruption within the local Janpad Panchayat. His statements had sparked discussion and debate in the area, earning him both support and criticism. Locals said he was vocal about transparency in panchayat functioning and often addressed gatherings on governance-related issues.

His sudden death has led to a wave of shock and mourning in Algi village and nearby areas. Residents gathered outside his home and the temple premises on Thursday morning to pay their respects. Family members and followers described him as outspoken and deeply connected to village life despite his ascetic status.

Police officials said further action will depend on medical reports and procedural formalities. The administration has appealed to people to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed as per law. No protest or law-and-order issue was reported in the village following the incident.
