The victim, Rubina, wife of BJP councillor Shahid Mew from Ward No. 15, was attacked around 5:30 pm in Abhinandan Nagar. According to investigators, Sahil, Shahid Mew’s son from his first marriage, allegedly conspired to kill Rubina, whom his father married around seven months ago.
Police said Rubina was returning to her rented house from her maternal home in Madarpura by auto-rickshaw. As she approached her residence, two youths riding an Apache motorcycle intercepted the vehicle. One of them allegedly stabbed Rubina multiple times in the abdomen, chest and head before fleeing the scene.
Local residents rushed to her aid, and Shahid Mew took her to the district hospital. Doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Initial investigation faced a hurdle as CCTV cameras near the crime scene were non-functional due to a power outage. However, police examined footage from surrounding areas and gathered circumstantial evidence that led them to identify the suspects.
A key breakthrough came from the statement of Rubina’s minor daughter, who was present at the time of the attack. In a video statement accessed by investigators, the child identified Sahil and his associate as the attackers. Police said the child’s account is a crucial piece of evidence in the case.
Auto-rickshaw driver Sitabai Dabi told police that Rubina boarded her vehicle from Shukla Chowk. Near her house, Rubina asked the driver to stop so she could seat her daughter properly. At that moment, two youths arrived on a motorcycle and allegedly said, “You are not giving up,” before launching the knife attack and fleeing.
Police have also detailed the complex family background involved. Rubina had been married four times and had two minor children from her third marriage. Shahid Mew has been married three times and has multiple children from previous marriages, including Sahil.
Rubina’s brother, Peeru Shah, has demanded the strictest punishment for those responsible. While the main accused has not yet been arrested, police said raids are ongoing. Shahid Mew and the father of the alleged accomplice have been questioned.
Police officials said the case is being investigated from all angles and assured swift arrests based on evidence collected.
