Three members of a family, including a woman, were killed on the spot after a speeding Audi car rammed their motorcycle from behind on the Rewa–Raipur route in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday afternoon. The accident occurred near Kosta around 3:30 pm, police said, triggering shock and grief in the local community.
According to initial police findings, the victims were travelling on a motorcycle to Chirhula Nath temple to offer the first wedding invitation as part of a traditional Hindu ritual. The car, reportedly coming from Raipur towards Rewa at high speed, struck the two-wheeler with such force that it was completely destroyed, leaving no chance of survival for the riders.
The deceased have been identified as Sheetal Vishwakarma of Rathara village, and Shivam Vishwakarma and Bhagwat Vishwakarma, residents of Chachai. Family members said Bhagwat Vishwakarma was on his way to the temple ahead of his son Shubham’s wedding, scheduled for February 25. What was meant to be a customary and auspicious ritual turned into a tragedy within moments.
Eyewitnesses told police that the impact threw the motorcycle riders several metres into the air before they landed on the road. Passers-by rushed to help, but all three were declared dead at the scene due to severe injuries. Traffic on the stretch was briefly disrupted as police secured the area and cleared debris.
Rewa police reached the spot soon after being alerted and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. The Audi car involved in the accident has been seized. However, the driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the collision. Police said efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the driver, and a case has been registered under relevant sections related to rash and negligent driving causing death.
A senior police officer said investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and collecting eyewitness statements to establish the sequence of events and determine the exact speed of the vehicle at the time of the crash. The condition of the car and road is also being assessed as part of the probe.
The incident has left the Vishwakarma family and residents of Rathara and Chachai villages in deep mourning. Celebrations at the wedding house came to an abrupt halt, replaced by funeral preparations and an atmosphere of shock.
The accident has once again raised concerns over overspeeding on state highways passing through inhabited areas. Police officials urged motorists to follow traffic rules strictly, warning that reckless driving continues to claim innocent lives.
