An 11-year-old boy was critically injured after being hit by a speeding car on the Jaipur–Jabalpur National Highway passing through Rajgarh city on Friday afternoon. The impact of the collision threw the child nearly 20 feet from the spot, triggering panic among bystanders. He was rushed to the district hospital, where doctors said his condition remains serious.
The accident occurred near the Anjani Lal Temple, a busy stretch of the highway that cuts through the city. According to eyewitnesses, the boy was crossing the road while holding a kite. He reportedly jumped over the central divider and entered the opposite lane when a fast-moving car approaching from the bus stand side struck him with great force.
People present at the spot immediately gathered and arranged for the injured child to be taken to hospital. Police said the driver stopped the vehicle after the accident, and further action will be taken after a preliminary inquiry.
CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, clearly capturing the sequence of events. The video shows the child running across the highway with the kite, leaping over the divider and being hit within seconds of entering the fast lane. Witnesses said the boy did not check oncoming traffic before crossing, giving the driver little time to react.
The collision caused a brief disruption in traffic as locals gathered at the site. Police later cleared the area and restored movement on the highway. Officials said statements of eyewitnesses are being recorded and the CCTV footage will be examined as part of the investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted safety concerns related to the national highway passing through the heart of Rajgarh city. Residents say frequent accidents on this stretch point to the dangers posed by high-speed vehicles moving through densely populated areas.
Local people have renewed demands for the construction of a city bypass to divert heavy and fast-moving traffic away from residential zones. “Accidents like this keep happening. A bypass is urgently needed to protect pedestrians, especially children,” a resident said.
In addition to a bypass, residents have called for stricter speed enforcement, installation of speed breakers, pedestrian crossings and warning signage along the highway. They also urged the administration to deploy traffic personnel at vulnerable points during peak hours.
District authorities said the matter of road safety on the highway has been raised earlier and assured that necessary measures would be reviewed. Meanwhile, the focus remains on the treatment of the injured child, with doctors continuing to monitor his condition closely.
