A speeding dumper crushed a family of three to death in Gwalior on Thursday afternoon while they were travelling to an examination centre for the JEE (Main) entrance test. The victims—a farmer, his wife and their 18-year-old daughter—died on the spot after the heavy vehicle rammed their motorcycle from behind in the Ratwai–Bijoli police station area.
Police identified the deceased as Chandrapal Jatav (45), his wife Rajshri Jatav (40), and their daughter Arpita Jatav (18), residents of Jalaun district in Uttar Pradesh. Arpita was scheduled to appear for the JEE (Main) examination at BBM College in Ratwai.
According to Behat Sub-Divisional Officer of Police Manish Yadav, the family had borrowed a motorcycle from a constable posted at Girwai police station to reach the examination centre. While navigating unfamiliar roads, they overshot the centre by around 100 metres. After stopping to ask for directions, they turned back and were travelling toward the centre when the accident occurred.
“When the motorcycle was about 100 metres from the police station, a dumper, allegedly being driven at high speed and in a rash manner, hit it from behind,” Yadav said. “All three were thrown onto the road and came under the wheels of the vehicle, leading to instantaneous death.”
The impact left the scene gruesome, with police personnel describing extensive damage and personal belongings soaked in blood. The bodies were secured and sent for post-mortem examination under police supervision.
The dumper driver fled the spot immediately after the collision, abandoning the vehicle, which was carrying construction material. Police seized the dumper and launched a search operation to trace and arrest the absconding driver. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to determine liability and possible violations.
The tragedy has left Chandrapal Jatav’s family shattered. He is survived by two sons, Satyam and Bittu, who rushed to Gwalior upon receiving news of the accident. Relatives said the family had high hopes for Arpita, who was preparing diligently for the competitive engineering entrance examination.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and the unchecked movement of heavy vehicles in and around Gwalior. The Ratwai–Bijoli stretch has witnessed multiple fatal accidents in recent years. Locals and road safety advocates have repeatedly demanded stricter enforcement, speed regulation and designated routes for dumpers and other heavy vehicles.
Authorities said traffic arrangements and monitoring of heavy vehicles in accident-prone areas would be reviewed.
