In a tragic incident at Vivekananda Ghat in Narmadapuram, a teenager helplessly watched his elder brother and a friend drown in the Narmada River on Sunday evening. The boy pleaded for help from bystanders, but no one stepped in to rescue them.
The incident occurred around 5 PM. Three friends from Itarsi had come to the ghat for a holy dip. The victims — Dilkhush Thakur (20) and Yash Mehra (17) — crossed the safety chain and entered deep water, where they struggled and eventually drowned. The third boy, Krishna Thakur, remained at the shore and witnessed the entire incident unfold.
Tragedy Captured on Video
A distressing video of the incident has surfaced, showing both youths desperately trying to stay afloat before disappearing under the water. The footage has gone viral on social media, raising serious concerns about safety at public ghats.
Rescue Operation Suspended, Will Resume at Dawn
As soon as the authorities were informed, Town Inspector Saurabh Pandey and a team of Home Guards rushed to the site. A rescue operation was launched and continued for over two hours, but darkness forced the teams to suspend efforts. The search will resume at 6 AM on Monday.
Survivor’s Heartbreaking Statement: “I begged for help. No one came.”
Krishna Thakur, the sole survivor, said, “I was at the shore while my brother and Yash ventured deeper. When they started drowning, I screamed for help, but the people around us just watched. No one tried to save them.”
He added that both he and Yash had recently passed Class 10 and taken admission in Class 11 with Biology as their stream. Dilkhush had just cleared Class 12 and was preparing to join a BA LLB course in Indore.
Anger Among Locals, Questions Over Ghat Safety
The incident has sparked outrage among locals and relatives. Many blamed the lack of proper safety measures at the ghat. “There are no warning signs, no lifeguards, and no immediate rescue arrangements. This is complete administrative negligence,” a local resident said.
