Police have arrested three men in connection with an attack and criminal intimidation case involving the son of a BJP councillor from Ward-19, following alleged threats linked to his testimony in a sensitive communal incident. The assault took place on December 20 at the victim’s office under the Banganga police station limits.
The complainant, Masoom Jaiswal, told police that he received a threatening phone call earlier that morning from a man identifying himself as Shahrukh alias Jaleel Khan of Nazarpur, Ujjain. According to the complaint, the caller referred to a Hindu-Muslim dispute and demanded a personal meeting, warning of consequences if Jaiswal did not comply.
Police said that around 2 pm, Shahrukh arrived at the office along with associates on two motorcycles. While two of the men allegedly stayed outside, Shahrukh entered the premises armed with a knife, kicked the door, and threatened Jaiswal. The accused allegedly warned him not to withdraw or alter his statement in a case related to a spitting incident during the Mahakal procession in Ujjain. During the altercation, two office staff members, identified as Anita and Meera Bai, sustained injuries.
Based on the complaint and subsequent investigation, police arrested three Indore residents — Saurabh, Golu, and Vinod. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining accused. ACP Rubina Mizvani said the role of each suspect is being examined and it is yet to be conclusively established whether the attack was directly orchestrated to influence the Mahakal procession case.
The incident has its roots in July 17, 2023, when a person allegedly spat from a terrace during the Mahakal procession in Ujjain. Jaiswal had recorded the incident on his mobile phone, and the video later went viral, leading to the registration of an FIR. While two witnesses later changed their statements, Jaiswal maintained his original testimony.
Police have seized the office DVR as part of the investigation. Officials said further action will be taken based on evidence and witness statements.
