Tiger Skin Seized from Tribal Welfare Officer’s Mother’s Home in Jabalpur; 75-Year-Old Booked Under Wildlife Act
Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW), while investigating disproportionate assets of a senior officer, discovered a tiger skin at his mother’s house, leading to her arrest under the Wildlife Protection Act.
Officials said the tiger skin was found during an EOW raid at the Adhartal residence of Savitri Sarvate, mother of Jagdish Sarvate, Deputy Commissioner of the Tribal Welfare Department.
Tiger Skin Found During EOW Raid
On Wednesday, the EOW recovered the tiger skin while searching Savitri’s house as part of an ongoing probe into assets allegedly amassed by her son. The discovery prompted immediate involvement of the Forest Department.
According to officials, the tiger skin was being used as a mat during prayers. Preliminary assessment suggests the skin is nearly 30 years old.
Claim: Skin Was a Family Heirloom
During interrogation, Savitri stated that her father-in-law gifted the tiger skin nearly three decades ago. He reportedly lived in Mandla district and “somehow” acquired it, although she claimed ignorance about its exact origin.
“She said the skin was used only for religious purposes,” said an official familiar with the investigation. The house is registered in Savitri’s name, the Forest Department confirmed.
Booked Under Wildlife Act
Jabalpur DFO Rishi Mishra confirmed that Savitri was arrested under Sections 9 and 50 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, for illegal possession of wildlife parts. She was sent to jail the same night.
The seized tiger skin will now be sent to the Nanaji Deshmukh Wildlife Institute for forensic analysis to determine its age and whether it belonged to a male or female tiger.
Part of ₹6.75 Crore Assets Probe
The find comes amid a major EOW investigation against Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Sarvate for disproportionate assets. Raids conducted on July 22 and 23 at multiple locations—including Sarvate’s official residence in Jabalpur, ancestral home in Adhartal, a property in Bagh Mughalia (Bhopal), and a government quarter in Sagar—revealed assets worth ₹6.75 crore, against a legal income of ₹1.56 crore.
Officials reported recovery of luxury items, documents, and valuables during these searches.
