Tragic Bhopal Bride Shooting: Obsessed Cousin Kills Sister at Wedding, Gets Life Sentence, Commits Suicide

In a heartbreaking case of obsessive love turned deadly, a Bhopal wedding in 2014 ended in tragedy when Anurag Namdev shot his cousin, Dr. Jaishree Namdev, on her wedding day. The incident, rooted in unrequited affection, shocked Madhya Pradesh and highlighted the dangers of familial obsession.

Dr. Jaishree Namdev, a 26-year-old pediatrician, was celebrating her marriage to Dr. Rohit Namdev at Sundarvan Marriage Garden in Lalghati, Bhopal, on May 8, 2014. Amid the joyous varmala ceremony and photo session, Anurag, her cousin whom she treated as a brother, stormed the stage. He fired a pistol at point-blank range, striking Jaishree in the neck and killing her instantly. In the chaos, he attempted to shoot the groom but missed, injuring a guest, Kachru Sisodia, in the leg. Guests subdued Anurag, who was arrested on the spot.

Anurag's obsession began years earlier when he lived with Jaishree's family after his father's death. Her father, Ghanshyam Namdev, supported him like a son, even covering medical expenses. However, Anurag developed romantic feelings, proposing marriage despite their cousin relationship. Jaishree rejected him, viewing him as a sibling and even tying him a Rakhi. After her engagement to Rohit on February 3, 2014, Anurag's jealousy escalated. He sent threats, warning, "Take care of your daughters. They have a long life to live." Seeing engagement photos on social media fueled his rage, leading to the fatal attack.

During police interrogation, Anurag confessed: "I loved Jaishree immensely. I became mad for her. I could not see her belong to anyone else. That is why I killed her. Even if I get the death penalty, I accept it." The Bhopal District Court sentenced him to life imprisonment on February 11, 2015, based on eyewitness accounts and evidence.

Tragedy compounded in 2019 when Anurag, on parole, hanged himself at his Sagar home on June 12, just hours before returning to jail.ea1eba Ghanshyam Namdev lamented, "A pure sibling relationship was marred forever by passion and madness." This Bhopal murder case serves as a stark warning against unchecked obsession, destroying two families in its wake.
