Ujjain GRP Introduces QR-Based Driver Profiles to Boost Passenger Safety

The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Ujjain has launched a digital verification system for auto-rickshaw drivers to enhance the safety of devotees arriving in the temple town. The initiative, introduced on Friday, allows passengers to scan QR codes pasted on autos to check driver details, including any past criminal records.
Railway SP Padm Vilochan Shukla, who reviewed preparations at the GRP station, said profiles of 350 auto drivers have already been created. The system, he said, aims to help travellers verify the identity and background of drivers, particularly during the heavy footfall associated with visits to the Shri Mahakaleshwar temple.
Under the initiative, QR codes containing the driver’s name, address, mobile number, police verification status, and vehicle registration number will be displayed on participating autos. The information will open instantly on a smartphone once the code is scanned, giving passengers a quick safety check before boarding.
Shukla clarified that participation is voluntary, but those opting in will receive a verified “Our Ride, Trustworthy” tag issued by the GRP. The marking will indicate that the driver’s details have been cross-checked and cleared through the police database.
Ujjain sees approximately one lakh devotees daily, with nearly 30 percent arriving through the railway station or bus stand. Officials say the QR system is aimed at ensuring safer last-mile travel from these transit points to the Mahakal temple and other destinations.
The GRP plans to begin installing the QR codes in the first week of December. Passengers will also be able to submit feedback on their ride through the same interface after completing their journey. The police department has announced that drivers offering verified, safe services under the scheme will be recognised for their cooperation.
Authorities expect the initiative to strengthen trust between drivers and commuters, especially during peak pilgrimage periods when the influx of visitors is at its highest.
