Drunk Mob Beats Pickup Driver, Loots Cash and Chain in Rewa

A minor road accident in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district spiralled into a brutal assault and robbery after a group of intoxicated youths ganged up on a pickup truck driver late Tuesday night.

Driver Pleads, Mob Refuses to Relent

A pickup truck driver identified as Harihar Prasad was allegedly beaten and robbed by a group of inebriated youths in the Lauwa Laxmanpur area under Sagra police station limits in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, late on Tuesday. The incident, which began over a minor road brush, quickly turned violent when the accused called in more associates and surrounded the lone driver. The entire episode was captured on video by local bystanders and has since gone viral on social media, prompting police to launch a formal investigation.

Minor Scuffle Turns into Robbery

According to available information, Harihar Prasad was driving his pickup vehicle from Rewa towards Baikunthpur when his vehicle grazed a scooter near Lauwa Laxmanpur. What started as a roadside argument escalated rapidly. The scooter riders, allegedly heavily intoxicated, called their associates to the spot. The group then encircled the driver and began assaulting him without provocation.

Cash, Chain, and Goods Snatched

During the assault, the accused reportedly pulled cash from the driver's pocket, yanked a gold chain from his neck, and seized goods stored inside the pickup vehicle. Prasad, who was alone at the time, was left with no means to defend himself or call for immediate help. Witnesses say he repeatedly begged the mob to stop, but the accused continued the attack and looting undeterred.

Video Goes Viral, Case Comes to Light

Local residents present at the scene recorded the incident on their mobile phones. The footage, which subsequently spread across social media platforms, clearly shows individuals assaulting the driver and removing cash from his pockets. The video's circulation is what brought the case into public focus, as per reports. Had it not surfaced online, sources indicate the matter may have remained underreported.

Police Begin Probe

Following the incident, Harihar Prasad filed a complaint with the local police. Officers under the Sagra police station jurisdiction have confirmed they are examining the viral video and verifying the sequence of events. According to officials, the identities of the accused are being established, and arrests are expected shortly. Police have also indicated that the accused may face charges under relevant sections pertaining to assault, robbery, and public disorder.

Lone Driver, Easy Target

The fact that Prasad was travelling alone appears to have emboldened the group. This incident has raised concerns among transporters and night travellers in the region about road safety and mob violence over minor disputes. Locals in the Sagra area have called for quicker police response in such cases, pointing out that viral videos should not be the primary trigger for law enforcement action.

What Next

Police are expected to make arrests in the coming days as investigations progress. The case has also drawn attention to the broader issue of alcohol-fuelled violence on state highways and district roads in Madhya Pradesh. As per reports, authorities may also review CCTV footage from nearby areas to corroborate witness accounts. The incident is likely to prompt renewed discussion around patrolling on key routes during late-night hours in the Rewa district.
