Traffic Flow Restored on Rewa-Bela Bypass After 15-Hour Gridlock

Authorities clear massive pile-up caused by bridge closure, advise alternate routes for heavy vehicles

A massive 15-kilometre-long traffic jam that crippled the Bela Bypass and the stretch leading to the Maihar toll plaza for over 15 hours was finally cleared on Thursday. Thousands of vehicles, which remained stranded since Wednesday night, began moving following a sustained operation by joint teams from the Rewa and Satna police.

The Genesis of Chaos

The gridlock originated around 9:00 PM on Wednesday after the Bihra river bridge sustained structural damage. Authorities immediately shuttered the bridge to prevent any untoward incidents, effectively severing a critical transit artery. The sudden closure triggered a cascading effect, trapping thousands of heavy goods vehicles and passenger cars in a bottleneck that extended for kilometres, paralysing movement on the bypass and surrounding arterial roads.

Drivers Face Severe Hardship

For the stranded commuters, the night was one of uncertainty and frustration. Several truck drivers reported being stuck for the duration of the jam without access to basic amenities. "We have been stuck since night. The vehicle is not moving. We are waiting without food and water, and no one is there to help," said Mukesh Kushwaha, a stranded driver. Others echoed similar concerns, noting a perceived lack of immediate administrative presence during the early hours of the congestion.

Bridge Damage Triggers Diversion

The Bihra river bridge, commissioned in 2005, reportedly developed significant cracks in its girder and pier cap. In response, the local administration has issued an order banning all heavy vehicle traffic on this route until April 30, 2026. This restriction has necessitated an immediate diversion of long-distance traffic. Experts are currently investigating the root cause of the structural failure, with preliminary concerns pointing toward nearby construction activities and potential long-term wear on the infrastructure.

Administrative Action Taken

SDM Huzur, Dr. Anurag Tiwari, conducted an on-site inspection as the situation escalated. Following his assessment, he directed local officials to streamline traffic management and bolster police presence to expedite the clearance. The joint efforts of the Rewa and Satna police teams were instrumental in untangling the gridlock after nearly three hours of intensive on-ground coordination.

Revised Transit Routes

To prevent further congestion, the district administration has issued a fresh traffic advisory. Heavy vehicles travelling toward Prayagraj and Varanasi are now being directed to take the Maihar-Satna-Chitrakoot route. Meanwhile, light vehicle movement has been diverted through older city roads within Rewa to ease the burden on the bypass.

Growing Public Demand

While the immediate crisis has been mitigated, the incident has highlighted the fragility of current infrastructure in the region. Local commuters and transport unions are now demanding the development of more robust alternative routes to ensure that such instances do not paralyse national transit in the future. As authorities continue to monitor the repair work, they remain committed to ensuring that the diverted traffic flow remains stable in this latest news update from the region.
