Temples across Rewa reverberated with conch shells, bells and chants as devotees celebrated the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight on Friday. As the clock struck 12, priests began the traditional birth rituals, including the ceremonial bathing of the infant Krishna idol with Panchamrit, followed by prayers, aarti and offerings.
Devotees gathered at several temples across the city throughout the evening, with crowds continuing to arrive until late at night. Chants of “Nand ke ghar anand bhayo” and “Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki” filled temple premises as devotees marked Krishna Janmashtami and prayed for happiness and prosperity.
Temples Decorated for Janmashtami
Several prominent temples in Rewa were specially decorated for the festival. The Laxmanbagh Temple, Radha-Krishna Temple in Lakhauri Bagh and Radha-Krishna Temple in the university area were among the places where special arrangements were made.
Temple premises were illuminated with colourful lights and decorated with flowers. Elaborate tableaux depicting episodes associated with Lord Krishna were also prepared for devotees.
In several temples, idols depicting Krishna in his infant form were placed in decorated swings, creating a focal point for devotees visiting during the celebrations.
Panchamrit Abhishek and Makhana-Mishri Offering
The midnight birth ceremony marked the main religious moment of the celebrations.
Following the traditional rituals, the Bal Gopal idol was bathed with Panchamrit, a ceremonial mixture commonly used in Hindu worship. The deity was then dressed in new clothes and decorated before the birth aarti was performed.
Makhana-mishri and other food preparations were offered as bhog. After the rituals, devotees received prasad at the temples.
The sound of conch shells and bells accompanied the ceremonies as devotees joined in prayers and devotional chants.
Youth Participate in Matki Phod Events
Janmashtami celebrations also extended beyond temple rituals, with Matki Phod programmes organised in several parts of the city.
Groups of young people attempted to reach earthen pots suspended at height by forming human pyramids. Crowds gathered around the participants and encouraged them with applause and Krishna chants.
The atmosphere became particularly energetic when the pots were broken, with spectators cheering the teams taking part in the traditional celebration.
Children Arrive Dressed as Radha and Krishna
Children were another prominent part of the celebrations in Rewa.
Several youngsters visited temples dressed as Radha and Krishna. Some arrived in traditional Krishna attire, while others were dressed as Radha.
Decorated tableaux and beautifully adorned Bal Gopal idols attracted children and families visiting the temples. For many families, the festival provided an opportunity to involve children in devotional and cultural traditions associated with Krishna Janmashtami.
Devotional Atmosphere Continues After Midnight
The major temples remained crowded until late Friday night as families and groups of devotees waited for the midnight birth ceremony.
Women participated in bhajans and kirtans, while young people took part in Matki Phod and other programmes organised around the festival.
After midnight, devotees continued visiting the temples for darshan and prasad. The combination of religious rituals, decorations, devotional music and community celebrations kept Rewa's temples active well into the night.
For devotees, the midnight ceremony remained the central moment of Janmashtami, marking the traditional celebration of Lord Krishna's birth.
