Rewa Railway Station Lift Mishap Traps 9 Passengers for Two Hours
Passengers alleged there was no warning notice outside the faulty lift at Rewa Railway Station, where nine people remained trapped during a rescue operation on Wednesday.
A major accident was narrowly avoided at Rewa Railway Station on Wednesday after nine passengers got trapped inside a malfunctioning lift for nearly two hours at Platform No. 2. The passengers, who had just deboarded the Itwari Express, were rescued following a prolonged operation by railway staff and emergency teams.
The incident triggered panic at the station and raised fresh concerns over maintenance and passenger safety at railway premises.
Lift Stops Midway
According to railway officials, the lift suddenly stopped midway while carrying passengers from the platform area. Those trapped inside included a doctor and his three-year-old daughter. Passengers reportedly began shouting for help after the lift failed to move either upward or downward.
Initial reports indicate the lift was already under repair, but commuters claimed no caution board or warning notice had been placed outside the facility. Several passengers said they unknowingly entered the lift assuming it was operational.
Chaos At Station
The matter quickly drew attention after local representatives and railway personnel were informed about the situation. Sources familiar with the matter said panic spread briefly among family members waiting outside the lift as rescue efforts took longer than expected.
MP representative Sanjeev Shukla reached the station after receiving information from passengers. He later alleged that no senior railway official was initially present at the spot when the incident unfolded.
Officials said the Station Master informed them that senior staff members were on field duty at the time.
Rescue Operation Begins
Railway employees, along with technical staff, launched a rescue operation soon after the malfunction was reported. Medical teams were also called to the station as a precautionary measure.
Senior railway officials coordinated with technicians to restore movement in the lift and safely evacuate the trapped passengers. Food and drinking water were reportedly supplied to those inside during the operation.
After nearly two hours, all nine passengers were brought out safely.
Questions Over Backup System
One of the major concerns flagged during the incident was the apparent absence of a proper power backup system for the lift. According to those present during the rescue, the lift remained stuck because it could not function once the power supply was interrupted.
Passengers and local residents questioned how a lift undergoing repair could remain accessible without clear barricading or warning signage.
The incident has once again highlighted infrastructure and maintenance issues at busy railway stations, especially during ongoing repair work.
Medical Teams Deployed
Railway authorities confirmed that all rescued passengers underwent medical examination immediately after being brought out. Doctors found everyone to be stable and without serious health complications.
An ambulance was also stationed outside the platform area during the rescue process.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Shashank Gupta said technical failure led to the situation. He stated that railway authorities remained in continuous contact with officials throughout the operation and ensured the passengers were rescued safely.
Travel Arrangements Made
Following the rescue, railway authorities arranged onward transport for the affected passengers. Officials said eight passengers travelling towards Mauganj district were sent by taxi to Baraw area, while a woman travelling from Korba in Chhattisgarh to Rampur Naikin in Sidhi district was separately assisted along with her child.
Passengers, however, continued to express anger over what they described as negligence by railway authorities at Rewa Railway Station.
Safety Concerns Raised
The Rewa Railway Station lift incident has now sparked questions over safety audits, maintenance monitoring and emergency preparedness at railway stations handling large passenger movement daily.
Local authorities are expected to review the technical condition of the station’s lifts and other passenger facilities in the coming days.
