Water Bill Portal Triggers Outrage in Jabalpur; Mayor Ensures Flexible Payment Options
Digital Desk
Citizens of Jabalpur have expressed relief after protests against the state government’s plan to mandate monthly water bill payments. The Mayor clarified that residents can continue paying annually or every six months without penalties, while discounts for senior citizens remain in place.
Public Backlash
The newly launched state-level ‘Water Bill Portal’, covering over 400 urban bodies, initially required monthly payments. This move sparked dissatisfaction among citizens and local representatives, with similar protests reported in Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, and Ujjain. Public organisations demanded that the government prioritise convenience and affordability.
Concerns from Social Groups
P.G. Raj Pandey and other groups criticized the portal’s implementation without public consultation. They warned that monthly payments could place extra financial strain on the poor, middle class, and senior citizens.
Mayor’s Assurance
Mayor Jagat Bahadur Singh confirmed that citizens can pay monthly or in two lump sums (April and September) without penalties. Differently-abled individuals and senior citizens will continue receiving a 25% discount.
Portal’s Purpose
The portal aims to enhance transparency and flexibility, similar to electricity or telephone billing systems. The Jabalpur Municipal Corporation plans to recommend it as a citizen-friendly model across the state, ensuring no undue financial burden or pressure on residents.
