Youth Dies After Consuming Poison Outside Girlfriend’s Home in Guna; Police Probe Alleged Harassment

A 20-year-old man died after allegedly consuming poison outside his girlfriend’s house in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district on Friday evening, following the end of a three-year relationship after her family arranged her marriage elsewhere. Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the death.

The deceased has been identified as Arun Rajak, son of Ramjilal Rajak, a resident of Radha Colony. According to police and hospital records, Arun ingested a sulphur-based poison outside the girl’s residence and later informed a friend about his condition. Despite being rushed to the district hospital, he could not be saved.

Preliminary information suggests that Arun had been in a relationship with the woman for nearly three years. In recent days, her family reportedly finalised her marriage with another person, a decision that was communicated to Arun earlier on Friday. Investigators said the news left him deeply distressed.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Arun went to work as usual on Friday morning. Around midday, he spoke to his girlfriend over the phone for about 15 to 20 minutes. During the conversation, she allegedly told him that her family would not consent to their marriage. Shortly thereafter, Arun went to her house and consumed poison outside the premises.

After taking the extreme step, Arun called his friend Bhola and informed him of what he had done. Bhola rushed to the location, found Arun lying outside the house, and immediately took him to the district hospital. Doctors attempted treatment, but Arun succumbed to the effects of the poison.

Family members were informed and reached the hospital soon after. Relatives were seen in a state of shock and grief. Arun’s maternal uncle, Karan Rajak, told police that Arun had earlier called him saying he was going to meet the girl. What happened during or after that visit is still unclear.

The family has alleged that the girl’s parents and her three brothers had been mentally harassing Arun and had earlier warned him to stay away from her. Police officials said these allegations are being examined as part of the investigation.

A senior police officer said statements of family members, friends and other relevant witnesses are being recorded. “We are probing all aspects, including claims of harassment and the sequence of events on Friday,” the officer said, adding that further action would depend on the findings of the inquiry.
