OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT's capabilities on Mac by allowing users to connect the AI assistant with Apple's Messages app, enabling searches, summaries and certain message actions with user permission.

The integration represents a significant expansion of ChatGPT's ability to work with information stored on a Mac. It also raises fresh privacy questions because Messages can contain highly personal conversations, financial information, addresses, work details and other sensitive data.

Messages Access Needs Permission

ChatGPT does not automatically gain access to Messages when installed on a Mac.

Users must actively enable the relevant permissions before the integration can interact with the app. The setup involves controls within ChatGPT as well as macOS system settings.

According to the reported setup, users receive a notice explaining the type of message information ChatGPT can access. Additional macOS permissions are required for the assistant to perform actions within other applications.

Search And Summarise Chats

Once authorised, ChatGPT can work with conversations stored in Apple's Messages application.
