‘’Homebound’’-; India's powerful Oscar entry, 9-minute standing ovation in Cannes 2025

Hindi language film Homebound has been selected as the official Oscar entry from India in the Best International Feature Film category. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles.
Neeraj Ghaywan's film 'Homebound', inspired by Basharat Peer's essay "Taking Amrit Home," tells the story of migrant workers Mohammad Saiyub and Amrit Kumar during India's COVID-19 lockdown. Friends from Uttar Pradesh, they worked in Surat, Gujarat. The lockdown forced them to journey home in a crowded truck after their savings ran out. Tragically, Amrit became seriously ill during the arduous trip. The film premiered at Cannes 2025, receiving a standing ovation, and highlights the struggles faced by migrant workers during the pandemic.
The film, featuring Kahnvi Kapoor, Ishan Khattar, and Vishal Jethwa in pivotal roles, received a thunderous 9-minute standing ovation from the international audience. It was the only Indian feature film to be screened at the 2025 edition, making it a landmark occasion.
Changes made
India’s official entry to the Oscars, ‘Homebound’, September 26, 2025. On the one hand, there was a lot of excitement among the team and the fans; on the other hand, it appears the movie didn’t have it easy with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ahead of its India release. Reportedly, ahead of the big day, the CBFC had asked for multiple changes in the film. Read on to know more about it.
According to Bollywood Hungama, ‘Homebound’ was referred to the Revising Committee (RC). Reportedly, the reason could be the Examining Committee’s asking for several cuts. Following this, here are the modifications made by RC.Certain words have been muted and replaced at 6 places, including ‘gyan’.
The makers have been asked to delete the dialogue ‘Aloo gobhi…khaate hai’.Further, a two-second visual of a man performing puja was censored. RC also made changes in a dialogue in an important cricket match scene at 1 hour and 4 minutes, deleting 32 seconds from the sequence. However, further details of the deleted scenes have not been disclosed.
