Hearing on Ranveer Allahbadia’s Petition in Supreme Court Today
Ranveer Allahbadia, who landed in trouble for making obscene remarks about parents on the show India’s Got Talent, had recently filed a petition seeking the return of his passport. The Supreme Court will hear the matter today. Earlier, after several complaints were registered, the Supreme Court had granted Ranveer interim protection from arrest on his petition. However, as a condition, he was required to surrender his passport.
Petition filed on February 14
Several complaints had been filed against Ranveer Allahbadia across different cities in the country over his controversial remarks. On February 14, Ranveer filed a petition in the Supreme Court. In the petition, his lawyer Abhinav Chandrachud requested the court to consolidate all the complaints for hearing at a single location. Secondly, they sought protection from arrest in this case. Thirdly, citing continuous threats being received by Ranveer, they requested an expedited hearing and relief from the condition of surrendering his passport.
In the previous hearing, the bench had asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to submit a status report on the investigation. Justice Surya Kant remarked that if Allahbadia is frequently allowed to travel, it could hamper the investigation. He added, "When needed, you might not be available."
Allahbadia’s lawyer argued that interviewing prominent personalities from India and abroad is his primary source of livelihood. To this, Justice Surya Kant responded by saying that the investigation is expected to be completed within two weeks, and therefore, the next hearing would be scheduled after two weeks.
Ranveer was granted protection from arrest on February 17, though the court had strongly reprimanded him for his indecent remarks. The judge said that his language was distorted and his mindset was filthy, adding that not just parents but also daughters and sisters were left ashamed by his comments.
Court’s order: No further complaints to be registered
The bench, comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, also stated that although multiple FIRs had been filed against Allahbadia, no further cases would be registered against him regarding this matter.
Supreme Court allowed him to resume his podcast
On March 3, the Supreme Court permitted Ranveer Allahbadia to resume his podcast activities. Actor Emraan Hashmi appeared as the guest on the first episode after the permission was granted.
