Sulakshana Pandit’s Prayer Meet Held in Mumbai; Family and Bollywood Celebrities Pay Tribute

A prayer meet for veteran actress and singer Sulakshana Pandit, who passed away on November 6 at the age of 71, was held on Monday at the ISKCON Temple in Juhu, Mumbai. The event saw an emotional gathering of family members, friends, and several film industry personalities who came together to pay their final respects.

Sulakshana’s siblings, music composers Jatin and Lalit Pandit, and sister Vijayta Pandit were present, with Vijayta seen greeting guests with folded hands. Actor Mukesh Rishi, composer Avitesh Shrivastava (son of Aadesh Shrivastava and Vijayta Pandit), and actor Shiv Pandit also attended the solemn ceremony.

The late singer’s last rites were performed on November 7 at the Pawan Hans Crematorium, where industry veterans including Shabana Azmi and Poonam Dhillon joined in paying their respects.

Born on July 12, 1954, Sulakshana Pandit belonged to a family deeply rooted in music. A niece of classical legend Pandit Jasraj, she began her singing career at the age of nine and went on to collaborate with legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, and Kishore Kumar. She won the Filmfare Award in 1975 for “Tu Hi Sagar Hai Tu Hi Kinara” from Sankalp.

In cinema, she was a leading actress through the 1970s and early 1980s, starring alongside top actors such as Rajesh Khanna, Sanjeev Kumar, Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha, and Vinod Khanna in films like Uljhan, Aapnapan, and Khandaan.

Her personal life, however, was marked by solitude. Deeply affected after actor Sanjeev Kumar declined her marriage proposal, she never married and later lived a reclusive life. In a poignant coincidence, both Sulakshana and Sanjeev Kumar passed away on November 6, 40 years apart.
