Veteran actor Asrani passes away at 84, family performs quiet last rites, reason revealed

Legendary actor Asrani, known for his memorable performances in films like Sholay, Mere Apne, Bawarchi, Abhimaan, and Chupke Chupke, passed away on Monday afternoon (October 20) at Mumbai’s Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu. He was 84.

His last rites were performed peacefully in the presence of family members and close friends at Shastri Nagar crematorium in Santacruz. Asrani’s manager, Babubhai Thiba, confirmed that the veteran actor had been unwell for some time and breathed his last today.

According to sources, Asrani had expressed his wish that there should be no media commotion or public gathering after his death. He had told his wife, Manju Asrani, not to make any formal announcement. Respecting his wish, the family quietly conducted the funeral without public notice.

Worked in hundreds of films

Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, acted in hundreds of films over his long career. His impeccable comic timing and unique style made him one of the most loved faces of Hindi cinema. From the jailer in Sholay to roles in Chupke Chupke, Aa Ab Laut Chalen, and Hera Pheri, he entertained generations of audiences.

Five decades in the industry

Born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Asrani studied at St. Xavier’s School. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he appeared in over 350 films, carving a niche for himself as a talented comedian and supporting actor. During the 1970s, he reached the peak of his career with hits like Mere Apne, Koshish, Bawarchi, Parichay, Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, and Rafu Chakkar. His portrayal of the jail warden in Sholay remains one of the most iconic performances in Indian cinema.
