Subhash Ghai recalled his heated argument with Salman Khan and revealed how the actor’s father, Salim Khan, intervened and asked his son to apologise.
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai has revisited his past fallout with Salman Khan, recalling an altercation at a party that took place before the two eventually collaborated on the 2008 film Yuvvraaj. In a recent interview with Times Now, Ghai said the disagreement happened when Salman was under the influence of alcohol and an argument escalated into a physical scuffle.“Before the film, we had a fight. Hatha paai hui (we had a scuffle). Then his father scolded him,” Ghai recalled.
‘Salman was high’, says Subhash Ghai
Recalling the incident, Ghai said he and Salman were attending a party when the actor allegedly began making comments that the filmmaker objected to.“We were at a party. Salman was high. He was saying something wrong when I told him, ‘Don’t say that.’ He had some issue with me,” Ghai said.According to Ghai, Salman questioned one of his decisions as a director, after which the conversation turned into an argument.“He asked me, ‘Why did you do this or that?’ I said it is my decision as a director. He started abusing [me], I asked him not to do that. We had a spat there,” the filmmaker recalled.
Salim Khan stepped in
The situation was resolved the following morning after Salim Khan intervened.Ghai said Salim Khan called him and told him that he had reprimanded Salman over the incident. The veteran screenwriter then sent his son to Ghai’s home to apologise.“He sent Salman to my house to apologise to me. And he came. He politely apologised, after which I fell in love with him because he respected his father so much,” Ghai saidThe filmmaker said he decided to put the incident behind him, and the two eventually became friends and maintained a cordial relationship.“I let go of that issue. We often visited each other. After that, we did a film together,” Ghai added.
Salman and Ghai later worked together on Yuvvraaj
Their reconciliation eventually led to Yuvvraaj, which was released in 2008 and starred Salman Khan alongside Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.Ghai recalled that Salman’s brother had approached him about making a film with the actor. He subsequently developed a story with the intention of placing Salman in a role different from the characters he was known for playing. However, Yuvvraaj failed to make a significant impact at the box office.
Ghai on Salman’s star image
Looking back at the film, Ghai suggested that Salman’s larger-than-life image may have overshadowed the character. He argued that established stars can sometimes dominate their roles to such an extent that audiences see the actor rather than the character.Ghai also praised Amitabh Bachchan for successfully taking on a wide variety of characters throughout his career.Despite their earlier disagreement and the disappointing box-office performance of Yuvvraaj, Ghai has continued to speak positively about Salman over the years.
