The formation of the 8th Pay Commission may take time, with reports suggesting employees might have to wait till 2028. Earlier too, the 7th Pay Commission was implemented after several years of deliberation.
8th Pay Commission News: It has been almost seven months since the announcement of the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. But till now no step has been taken by the government regarding its implementation. Lakhs of employees and pensioners are worried about when this commission will be implemented. A question arises that how much longer will the employees have to wait for the increase in salary (government employees salary hike).
The government has not finalized the 8th Pay Commission announced in January this year, which will form the basis for revising the salary and other aspects. Even after seven months, the appointment of members and chairman is pending.
Government employees are getting restless due to the delay in the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. Their unions and representative bodies have written to the Center asking for clarity on the terms of reference of the 8th Pay Commission and the progress of related matters.
Earlier in this regard, the Finance Ministry had said in response to a question that it has sought inputs from various stakeholders including ministries, states and employee groups. The ministry said that a formal notification will be issued after the ToR is finalised.
How long can the 8th Pay Commission take?
More than seven months have passed since its announcement in January 2025 and the Terms of Reference (ToR) are still pending. To understand how long it may take to be implemented, it is worth looking at the 7th Pay Commission timeline.
If we take a closer look at the process of formation of the 7th Pay Commission and implementation of the recommendations, it took almost 3 years.
The 7th Pay Commission was announced on 25 September 2013.
The ToR (Terms Of Reference) notification was issued on 28 February 2014.
The members were appointed on 4 March 2014.
The commission submitted its report on 19 November 2015.
Implementation of recommendations by the government - 29 June 2016
Looking at the time period of the 7th Pay Commission, the 8th Pay Commission may take more than 3 years to be implemented. Given that the previous commission took a total of 44 months, the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission can be expected in late 2027 or early 2028.
