Change Aadhaar Mobile Number from Home: New Rule Lets You Update Using OTP and Face Scan

Soon, citizens will be able to update the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar right from home. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new digital service that allows users to change their Aadhaar-registered mobile number through the Aadhaar app using OTP verification and facial authentication eliminating the need for documents or visits to enrollment centres. The move is expected to benefit people in remote locations and senior citizens the most.

How the New Service Will Work

UIDAI has simplified the process to ensure it can be completed within minutes:

  • Download the Aadhaar app.

  • Enter your Aadhaar number and the new mobile number.

  • Verify the change using an OTP sent to either the old or the new mobile number.

  • Complete face authentication through the smartphone camera.

Why Updating Aadhaar Mobile Number Is Important

Aadhaar is India’s largest identity ecosystem, linked to the data of over 130 crore people. The registered mobile number is crucial as it enables access to bank accounts, government subsidies, income tax services, and platforms like DigiLocker via OTP.

If the number becomes inactive or is lost, users face difficulties. Until now, updating it required visiting an enrollment centre for biometric verification, often involving long queues. The new digital process eliminates that hassle.

UIDAI’s New Aadhaar App Launched Last Month

UIDAI recently introduced a redesigned mobile app for Aadhaar. The app allows users to store the Aadhaar details of up to five family members on one device and share only the required information when needed.

The app also brings UPI-style QR-based sharing, enhanced security through facial authentication, and selective disclosure of personal information.

Key Features of the New Aadhaar App
  • Aadhaar on your phone: Carry e-Aadhaar digitally without the need for physical copies.

  • Face-scan sharing: Share identity details securely using facial authentication.

  • Secure login: App access protected through biometrics.

  • Multi-language support: Available in several Indian languages.

  • Offline access: View Aadhaar even without an active internet connection.

Why a New App When mAadhaar Already Exists?

Both the old mAadhaar and the new Aadhaar app support digital Aadhaar use, but their primary functions differ:

  • mAadhaar is still used for PDF downloads, PVC card requests, and Virtual ID generation.

  • The new Aadhaar app is built with a privacy-first approach, offering selective sharing of only essential details and stronger security.

How Users Will Benefit
  • Faster hotel check-ins, SIM activation, and bank KYC.

  • Manage multiple family members’ Aadhaar in one device.

  • Enhanced privacy through selective information sharing.

Launched in 2009, Aadhaar now covers more than 130 crore residents. It began as a physical card, evolved into the mAadhaar app, and has now moved fully digital under the Government’s Digital India push.
