Clashes erupt at JNU between students and police

The protest by leftist students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) became tense on Saturday evening. They were protesting demanding an FIR against the student union Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). During this, they clashed with Delhi Police.

Left-wing students have accused Delhi Police of brutal assault. Meanwhile, Delhi Police has also detained JNU Students' Union President Nitish Kumar.

Police detained 28 students

Left students were planning to march from JNU campus to Vasant Kunj North police station on Saturday evening, October 18. However, police stopped the students at the West Gate of the campus by putting up barricades.

During this, students had a scuffle with police personnel. Police have detained 28 students, including 19 boys and 9 girls. Meanwhile, police have accused students of breaking barricades during the protest and several police personnel were injured in the pushing and shoving.

JNUSU President, Vice President and Secretary taken into custody

JNU Students' Union President Nitish Kumar, Vice President Manisha and General Secretary Muntiya Fatima have also been taken into custody. After this, the student union president also released a video giving this information.

According to police, there was a clash between left and right wing students on campus on Dussehra day. Police had talked to student organization leaders and promised legal action, but students continued their protest after which this action was taken.

Students were angry with police action

Left wing students were angry about police not taking action after the assault case during the general body meeting on October 3.

The student union president released a video after being taken into custody. In this, he said that on the day of the meeting, ABVP people held me, the vice president and other workers hostage for several hours. We complained to the police. Police came but ABVP beat us in front of Delhi Police.

Today when we were protesting, Delhi Police also beat us, tore our clothes. They have detained us but till now no FIR has been registered against ABVP.

Left's allegation - Police protects ABVP

Left organizations allege that police protects Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) students and does not take action against them.

The organization says that action was promised but nothing has happened so far.

Students were protesting without permission

According to police, around 6 PM, 70-80 students gathered at the West Gate without permission and started a sit-in protest.

But students tried to break them. In this clash, 6 police personnel were injured, including 4 men and 2 women. They were sent for primary treatment.

Police said - Students engaged in physical altercation

Students said that on Dussehra day during the fight, police only took one side's perspective, while ABVP students had committed violence. Police reported that during the scuffle, some students also used abusive language. Action was taken to control the detained students to prevent any major incident. The university administration has appealed to students to remain calm and follow rules.

JNU Administration Says Investigation Will Be Done

JNU administration has said that the matter is being investigated and strict disciplinary action will be taken against whoever is found guilty. Additionally, security arrangements have been increased on campus to prevent such incidents in the future. This incident occurred just before the student union elections, when all student organizations are active on campus and campaigning. In such a situation, this conflict could make the election atmosphere more sensitive
