IIT Guwahati Launches AI‑Training Programme for School Teachers to Strengthen Education Quality

In a landmark step toward integrating technology in school education, IIT Guwahati has commenced a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme for school teachers, coinciding with the formal introduction of AI in school curricula in Assam. The initiative aims to align teaching practices with the demands of a rapidly digitizing world.

Under the initiative, the institute’s Mehta Family School of Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (MFSDS&AI) conducted a residential training session for its first batch of 126 teachers from across Assam. The training not only equipped them with technical knowledge in AI but also covered ethical dimensions such as data privacy and fairness, and prepared them to deliver AI coursework in classrooms.

Preparing Teachers for New Curriculum, Creating Textbooks

With Assam introducing AI as a subject from Class 11 in government schools, there was an urgent need to build teaching capacity. IIT Guwahati responded by training educators and contributing directly to curriculum resources — two of its faculty members have co‑authored Class 11 AI textbooks, with work on Class 12 textbooks already underway. According to the institute’s director, this step demonstrates commitment not only to teaching delivery, but also to foundational content development  a move aimed at ensuring accurate and consistent instruction across the state’s schools.

A Broader Effort: From Teachers to Students

This teacher‑training drive dovetails with another recent IIT Guwahati initiative the launch of its “AIQ” programme, aimed at introducing AI, robotics and IoT to students from grades 6 to 12 under its broader Project Vidhya.

In past years, IIT‑G had conducted large‑scale training for 1,000+ teachers under STEM‑education efforts, covering subjects like electronics, coding, robotics and 3D printing  signalling its long‑term commitment to improving technical and scientific literacy through effective pedagogy.

Impact and Future Plans

State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu lauded the programme’s aim to inspire students toward science and mathematics by improving teaching quality and making these subjects more accessible.

IIT Guwahati has indicated that while this batch focused on Assam, subsequent batches will include teachers from other northeastern states. Training for educators from Bhutan has already begun, pointing to the programme’s regional vision.

As India expands digital learning under national education reforms, IIT Guwahati’s initiative may serve as a model for integrating AI into school teaching  preparing both teachers and students for a future defined by technology and innovation.
