Filmmaker Karan Johar has shared a heartwarming memory of his late father and veteran producer Yash Johar, recalling the day he bought his first Burberry jacket after the success of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Sharing the anecdote on his father’s birth anniversary, Karan remembered how excited he was after the blockbuster success of his directorial debut. He said he decided to celebrate the milestone by buying a designer jacket from Burberry.
However, the reaction from his father was far from what Karan expected.
According to Karan’s recollection, when he proudly showed the jacket to Yash Johar, his father looked at it and asked, “Beta… yeh kya hai?” Karan replied that it was a Burberry jacket, after which his father jokingly responded that it was “bahut buri hai”.
Karan said the moment left him surprised initially but soon turned into laughter, describing it as a reflection of his father’s simple nature and unique sense of humour.
The filmmaker recalled that despite achieving success in the film industry, Yash Johar remained grounded and valued simplicity over luxury. Karan said his father was always supportive of him and often encouraged him, even while making humorous comments about his choices.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, released in 1998, marked Karan Johar’s debut as a director and became a major commercial success. The film, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji, went on to become one of the most remembered Hindi films of the era.
Yash Johar, who founded Dharma Productions, was known as one of Hindi cinema’s respected producers. His productions included several successful films, with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai becoming an important milestone for both Dharma Productions and Karan’s career.
