At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured after a fuel tanker exploded following a traffic collision in western Iran, Iranian state media reported. The incident occurred on Saturday on an intercity road linking Sanandaj County in Kurdestan province with Hamedan County in neighbouring Hamedan province.
According to Iran's state-run IRIB broadcaster, the tanker was involved in a traffic accident before catching fire. The resulting blaze spread to several vehicles in the area, adding to the casualties. Emergency teams were dispatched to the scene and the injured were taken to a hospital in Sanandaj.
Tanker explosion follows traffic collision
The accident occurred on a road between Sanandaj and Hamedan, an important intercity route in western Iran. Emergency medical officials said the explosion occurred after the tanker was involved in a collision, causing flames to engulf nearby vehicles.
State media cited Babak Hodaei, head of emergency medical services at Kurdestan University of Medical Sciences, as confirming the casualties and the continuing rescue response.

The Sanandaj area has also witnessed a deadly tanker-related accident in the past. In 2018, a collision involving a fuel tanker and an intercity passenger bus near Sanandaj killed 15 people and injured four others, according to AP.

The tanker explosion occurred as Iran remains at the centre of heightened regional tensions involving shipping and energy infrastructure. However, the western Iran incident was reported as a traffic accident, with no indication in the initial reports that it was connected to the wider military confrontation in the region.
Separately, reports this week have described incidents involving oil tankers in and around the Gulf, including US military strikes on Iranian-linked crude carriers. Those developments are distinct from the road accident in Kurdestan province and should not be conflated with the cause of Saturday's explosion.
