US Softens Tariff Stance, Praises India

Amid ongoing tariff tensions, a Trump official signals a shift, stating, "I'm a fan of India," hinting at improved bilateral trade relations.

The US has imposed a 50% tariff on India, straining trade relations between the two countries. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has stated that the US wants to strengthen its relationship with India. He advised India not to purchase oil from Russia and proposed to jointly purchase oil from the US.

The US has imposed a 50% tariff on India. This tariff is the highest in the world. Trump's tariff decision has strained trade relations between India and the US.

Meanwhile, the US appears to be softening its stance again. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright recently stated that the US wants to strengthen its relationship with India. His statement comes at a time when Trump said India should not buy oil from Russia.

The US sees a bright future with India.
In fact, speaking to news agency ANI at the New York Foreign Press Center, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said that Washington does not intend to impose punitive tariffs on New Delhi. Rather, its goal is to end Moscow's military actions in Ukraine.

Wright emphasized that the US sees a bright future with India and called for greater coordination on the Ukraine conflict. Wright stated that there are plenty of oil exporters in the world and that India doesn't need to buy Russian oil. He claimed that India buys oil from Russia because it's cheaper there.

'India should buy oil with us'
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said, "We want India to buy oil with us. You can buy oil from every country in the world, just not Russian oil. That's our position. The US has oil to sell, and so does everyone else."

Notably, these comments by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright come at a time when the US has imposed a 50 percent tariff on India. US President Donald Trump has accused India of fueling Russia's deadly attacks on Ukraine by purchasing subsidized crude oil.

'India a Special Energy Partner'
Chris Wright explained during the conversation that he believes India shares the US goal of ending the Russia-Ukraine war and added that Washington views New Delhi as a key trading partner. He also said, "I'm a big fan of India. We love India. We look forward to more energy trade and more mutual exchanges with India, and then India gets involved in some other issue."
