NJ Governor Murphy Criticizes Trump Tariffs, Eyes India-US Oil Deal

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy opposes Trump's tariff policies and signals a potential major oil trade agreement in ongoing India-US trade discussions.

Phil Murphy, Governor of New Jersey and a senior Democratic Party leader, criticized President Donald Trump's tariff policy while expressing his views on India-US trade relations and visa issues. He stated that the ongoing trade talks between India and the US would find a practical solution to the 50% tariff dispute. Murphy also hinted that this agreement could include a major negotiation related to the oil trade.

Murphy, who is on a six-day visit to India, criticized President Donald Trump's tariff policy during an interview in Mumbai. He said, "Imposing heavy tariffs on allies is not the right approach. It is possible to relax the current tariff policy and find a less punitive solution."

Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has also previously stated that the US will play a key role in India's energy security in the coming years. The US is currently India's fifth-largest supplier of crude oil and second-largest LNG supplier.

Statement on China and Russia

Murphy supported Trump's tough stance on Russia, saying that it is necessary to hold Russia accountable, but that punishing allies is wrong. Regarding China, he said, "China cannot be spared under any circumstances; it must be held accountable."

Concerns on Visa Policy

Due to the large Indian community in New Jersey, Murphy also expressed concern about H-1B and student visa policies. He said that recent visa policies are going in the wrong direction, harming Indian students and professionals. Murphy suggested that American universities could adopt partnership programs like the 1+3 and 2+2 models in India.

Relations Under Temporary Strain

Regarding India-US relations, he said, "This tension is a temporary phase, not a long-term problem. Restoring trust will not be easy, but I am confident that the strong relationship between the two countries will endure."
