Bangladesh government steps in to rescue the 700-kg albino buffalo; buyer gets full refund as animal heads to National Zoo
In an unusual turn of events ahead of the festive season, Bangladesh authorities have intervened to stop the slaughter of a rare albino buffalo that became an overnight internet sensation. Popularly dubbed the "Trump buffalo" due to a peculiar tuft of golden hair on its head, the 700-kg animal was rescued from a scheduled Eid-ul-Adha sacrifice and has now been permanently relocated to the Bangladesh National Zoo in the capital.
The massive white-pinkish buffalo was raised at the Rabeya Agro Farm in Narayanganj, located on the outskirts of Dhaka. It had already been auctioned off for 3.85 lakh Bangladeshi Taka (approximately ₹3 lakh) to a local buyer for the upcoming festival. However, its sudden rise to digital fame prompted senior government officials to step in and secure its retirement.
Sudden Social Media Frenzy
The four-year-old animal caught the attention of netizens last week when videos showcasing its unique appearance surfaced online. The buffalo’s bright white coat and distinct golden crown drew immediate comparisons to the iconic hairstyle of former US President Donald Trump.
As the clips went viral, the Narayanganj farm transformed into an unexpected tourist hotspot. Hundreds of visitors, including families, curious locals, and social media influencers, began choking the area to catch a glimpse and snap selfies with the animal, creating a logistics challenge for the farm owners under deadline pressure to manage festival crowds.
Ministry Steps In
"The crowd was getting unmanageable, and the animal's safety became a priority," said a source familiar with the matter.
Recognising the public interest and the biological rarity of the albino breed, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a directive to halt the sacrifice. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed personally instructed local administration and law enforcement officials to ensure the buffalo's safe transit. To ensure fairness, the government confirmed that the buyer who originally purchased the animal at 550 Taka per kilogram would receive a full financial refund.
Relocation to National Zoo
On Wednesday evening, officials from the Department of Livestock Services, backed by local police, supervised the smooth transfer of the Trump buffalo from the Narayanganj facility. A specially modified transport vehicle was used to move the heavyweight animal to its new home at the National Zoo in Mirpur, Dhaka.
Two-Week Mandatory Quarantine
Zoo authorities have already set up a dedicated enclosure for the special guest. Speaking to reporters, Zoo Curator Atiqur Rahman stated that the buffalo is currently resting after the journey. Following standard veterinary protocols, the animal will remain under strict medical observation and quarantine for the next two weeks to acclimatise to its new environment before the general public is allowed access.
Long Life Ahead
Livestock experts pointed out that at just four years old, the albino buffalo is in the prime of its youth. If kept in healthy, stress-free conditions under state supervision, it is expected to live for many more years, serving as a major attraction for the zoo. Meanwhile, back at Rabeya Agro Farm, owner Zia Uddin Mairda expressed relief that the viral Trump buffalo found a safe sanctuary, marking a rare happy ending in the chaotic rush of the festive market.
