China–Japan Tensions Drive Demand for Indian Seafood

India is emerging as a key beneficiary of rising geopolitical tensions between China and Japan, with shares of domestic seafood exporters surging on Wednesday after Beijing imposed a blanket ban on Japanese seafood imports. The move, prompted by a sharp diplomatic escalation over Taiwan, has created fears of a supply gap in China opening the door for Indian suppliers.

The immediate market reaction was strong. Avanti Feeds, one of India’s largest shrimp exporters, rose nearly 10%, marking its steepest two-month gain. Coastal Corporation shares climbed about 5%, buoyed by expectations of higher orders from China. The company had earlier announced plans to expand its export footprint in the Chinese market.

China’s ban comes after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated on November 7 that Japan would deploy its military if China attacked Taiwan. Beijing denounced the remark as “provocative” and escalated the dispute when its Consul General in Japan warned of severe consequences for any external interference. Both countries subsequently summoned each other’s envoys, and travel advisories were issued for citizens on both sides.

For India, the timing offers rare relief. The US recently raised tariffs on Indian seafood to as high as 50%, leading to a 9% dip in shipments to America in October. Exporters hope that rising demand from China, Vietnam and Thailand will offset the loss. India exported seafood worth $7.4 billion last fiscal year, dominated by frozen shrimp and fish.

Japan, meanwhile, faces a significant setback. Nearly a quarter of its seafood exports are shipped to China, and the renewed banlinked to earlier concerns over wastewater discharge from the Fukushima nuclear plant—threatens to deepen losses for its fishing industry.

Both Beijing and Tokyo have issued security advisories amid rising public anger, underscoring how trade, diplomacy and domestic sentiment are now deeply entwined in the unfolding crisis.
